Because I integrate personal training and dietetics, I have a combined appreciation for the capacity to assist people in the prevention and treatment of many diseases, illnesses and injuries. As a dietitian and personal trainer, the needs of the patient/client come first. Each person is unique with separate and specific requirements. The role of the personal trainer and dietitian is to help guide each person towards health and well being via education and encouragement.
Current research supports the fact that diet and exercise are directly correlated to health. The magic of this truth is that the patient/client is able to execute some control over the state of their condition. Many diseases including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, some cancers and osteoporosis have continuously been shown to be preventable and controllable via exercise and appropriate diet. To me, this is miraculous! Instead of being helpless and hopeless, there is a method of control available to some people. In many situations, an individual need not be a victim of circumstance but, instead, has the opportunity to improve, prevent or overcome a disease.
For this reason, I feel it is an honor to work in these professions. My philosophy is that dietetics and personal training are means to better health. They are both teaching- and healthcare-based careers that require currency of knowledge, openness to listening to patients/clients, concern for others, patience, and limitless energy. It is a privilege to be entrusted in the health and well being of a person. It is a duty to respect that privilege and provide the best guidance possible.
My vision is the acknowledgement of nutrition by a larger majority of the population as the most successful, least invasive treatment modality to our pressing health crisis. My role as a health coach is as a messenger and teacher of the ideal medicine- a whole food, plant-based diet.
